Doctoral Studies

Doctoral studies in the Mathematical Engineering doctoral study programme accredited at FNSPE follow on from successfully completed master's studies in a relevant field. The Department of Mathematics provides the Mathematical Engineering programme with the specialisations Mathematical Modelling, Software Engineering and Mathematical Physics. Mathematical Engineering is interdisciplinary in nature, based on the application of theoretical knowledge in other scientific disciplines and in engineering practice: in the mathematical modelling of processes in nature, technology and environmental protection, in modern areas of mathematical physics, in theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics, and in software engineering applied especially in the natural sciences.

  • Mathematical Modelling focuses on the creation and analysis of deterministic and stochastic models of processes in a wide range of physical, engineering, medical and economic research. Topics are often based on the needs of society.
  • Mathematical Physics focuses on mathematical problems of quantum theory; in particular, it studies abstract mathematical models using computers for numerical and symbolic computations and simulations of physical processes. Many dissertation topics are based on research projects supported by grant agencies.
  • Software Engineering focuses on mathematical problems connected with a wide range of computer science tasks. Very often, this involves developing large-scale computer programs for specific research and commercial projects.
Doctoral studies combine specialised lectures, courses and seminars with independent research on the dissertation topic. Students join research teams at the faculty and at partner institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad, present their results at international conferences and publish in scientific journals. Studies are completed with the Doctoral State Examination and the defence of the dissertation. The standard length of study is four years; the programme can also be studied in the combined form.
