A fuzzy-based perspective to reduce uncertainty affecting the process of work-related stress evaluation

popis: | Work-related stress is a growing problem around the world, currently representing a major concern for occupational safety and health of human resources [1]. Not only does this phenomenon affect general physical and mental conditions of employees, but it also negatively influences the productivity level of organisations. Work-related stress is typical of those contexts characterised by an excessive work demand for execution of tasks, exceeding the personal capability to successfully carry them out. Aspects related to organisational culture, management practices, physical and/or mental load, relationships with colleagues and so on, can be identified as potential stressors at workplaces. An effective risk management approach should be implemented for first identifying which ones of these are present in a given workplace and secondly exploring the related root causes. On the basis of the attention given by the European Commission Council Framework Directive [2] to the prevention of work-related stress and the management of psychosocial risks [3], the present work proposes a mathematical model aimed at evaluating and classifying the main stress factors by means of linguistic evaluations of importance. To such an aim, the Fuzzy Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (FTOPSIS) will be applied to manage and minimise the vagueness derived from the attribution of human evaluations [4]. An application developed in an Italian airport will be presented to demonstrate the validity of the approach. Practical solutions will therefore be proposed as potential suggestions for improving workers’ wellness, satisfaction and productivity. |
